100 Days Until Boston: My Week In Review

42 days of training completed and 100 more days until I get the chance to take my spot in the starting corral and run the Boston Marathon as part of Team Tufts.  Even though this will be my 5th marathon, every time I train it is a new journey.  You never know what’s around that next corner.  You just keep moving forward, putting one foot in front of the other, running your miles, putting the work in, and then one day, before you know it, the big day arrives and there you are, running your marathon.  It is one of the most amazing, powerful, and overwhelming feelings you could ever experience.  Finishing the distance and taking it all in, you do begin to realize, wow…I just climbed a mountain… and the view from the top is OUTSTANDING!

Over the past week, so much has happened.  It’s been a whirlwind, but in typical fashion, I’m loving the chaos.  I logged 23 miles combined on the dreadmill, an indoor track, and the open road.  I attended my first Track Tuesday.  I got to my class at OrangeTheory and got my butt kicked as usual.  I fit in my weekly Yoga class which was so necessary for my body.  I hit a record fundraising amount for myself in a 48 hour period.  I attended our Team Tufts Kick Off Meeting at Tufts Medical Center which was amazing, and last night I held my first true fundraising event at a local yoga studio, Thrive Wellness.

I joined our local running club, Gate City Striders, about 6 weeks ago and signed up for their indoor track workouts to help keep me focused, add to my training, and get me a speed workout each week, not to mention the social aspect of meeting some great new people and learning from them all as well as the coaches.  This Tuesday was the first of six weeks of indoor track.  IT. WAS. AWESOME.  Notice, I did not say easy.  That it was not.  I have this love/hate relationship with speed work.  Before I start, I’m dreading it.  Once I start, I’m focused and determined and even though it hurts, it feels so good.  Once I finish, the adrenaline rush rules, my body feels “worked”, and I feel great!  This week I did 5 sets of 3 laps at 5k pace/lap with 1 lap for rest between each set.  Total was about 3 miles and pace for each lap was pretty consistent averaging 1:32 per lap.  It helped that I had my partner in crime Nicolasa of  Shoe Laces & Bibs running stride for stride with me!  I can’t wait to see how these workouts translate into results longer term.

On Wednesday afternoon around 2:30 PM, I announced a raffle that I’d be doing to help raise money for Tufts Medical Center.  I planned to sell 20 tickets for $100 each for the chance to win a long weekend away at my family’s beach house in York, Maine.  I wasn’t sure what the interest would be like, but I figured I could manage to sell 20 tickets in a months time so I set the raffle to run for one month.  Yesterday, at 9:30 AM the last raffle ticket was sold.  I couldn’t even believe how quickly the tickets went and how much interest there was!  I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to do this because in just under 48 hours I was able to raise $2,000 which was donated directly to Tufts Medical Center on my behalf.  THANK YOU to everyone that participated.  A winner will be drawn as soon as all payments are received.  Stay tuned…

Thursday evening we had our Team Tufts Kick Off Meeting so I headed down to Tufts Medical Center with my teammate and friend, Alana.  We somehow got to Boston in less than an hour and had an hour to kill, so we hoofed it over to the Adidas RunBase location to figure out our size for the ever so awesome Boston Marathon jacket!  We were in and out of the store with jackets in hand and hoofed it back to Tufts with one minute to spare before the meeting began! Now THAT was a workout…in boots…with heels.  There were so many great things about the meeting in general, but my favorite part of it was getting to know my teammates.  We did a quick (dreaded) ice breaker (wahhh…wahhhh…wahhh…), which turned out to be the highlight.  Sitting in a room surrounded by so many individuals who have a connection to Tufts and feeling the energy from all of us as determined runners with the same goals in mind was mind blowing.  It reminded me how quickly life can change and how grateful I am for every moment we are given.  It reinforced that you just never know what other people around you might be dealing with in life OR what they may have accomplished in life.  I am so proud to say that we have team members running for their young children fighting Leukemia and others for their Dad, just like me.  There are nurses and physicians on our team.  One member averages 150 miles a week running (WHAT!!!), another has completed a marathon in all 50 states, and still another has run over 100 marathons in her lifetime.  I am one lucky lady to be part of such an amazing team of people!

Finally, last night I held my first true fundraising event at Thrive Wellness here in Amherst, NH.  A huge thank you to Melissa and Melinda who own Thrive Wellness for allowing me to hold my event there and for letting my good friend, yogi, and instructor in training, Victoria (visit her at Shush Yoga), lead the class!  We had a great turnout and Victoria was just outstanding as our instructor.  She has this quality of relaxing people simply through her words (and yes, the British accent helps).  Her opening words actually brought me to shed a few tears as I hid in the back of the room.  I had this moment of just feeling outright relief that my Dad is alive and well and feeling gratitude for all of the friends that joined me at this event to help support such a great cause that I believe in wholeheartedly.  IT.  WAS.  AWESOME.  We all enjoyed a wonderful class and then headed downstairs for the raffles!  Thanks to nuun, Honey Stinger, Fitletic, Momentum, Thrive Wellness, BondiBands, Arctic Ease, and Sweaty Bands for the awesome prizes!  Together we raised another $250 for Tufts Medical Center and had so much fun doing it!

Even though the week was jam packed, I wouldn’t change a thing.  My long run was finished early this morning with my rockstar crew and now I am looking forward to a relaxing day in the snow with my family.
